My Favorite Places

Cais do Sodré

Cais do Sodré
This district where brothels and play houses were established was very popular under sailors who after months at sea wanted a night of fun and they found that in the arms of a prostitute. Now it’s one of the busiest entertainment areas of the Portuguese capital. The epicenter of this former “Red Light District” is the Rua Nova do Carvalho, a street where the road surface is painted bright pink. Here you will find an extensive range of unusual and original places where you can attend burlesque shows, a cocktail with a name that many a mom would shock (such as a “puta fina” or refined whore), Eat Portuguese tapas, take a drink or enjoy a live act with alternative music.

Bairro Alto

Bairro Alto
This picturesque district is undoubtedly for decades the meeting place to drink your first drink. According to tradition in this animated streets lined with paving stones, you drink a caipirinha, caipirosca in the middle of the street while enjoying the mild temperatures (although on colder evenings the same ritual with the same mathematical precision is followed).

The Clube da Esquina in Rua da Barroca (Rua da Barroca 30-32) is a cultbar where allegedly the best mojitos of Lisbon are served.

LX Factory

LX Factory
This is the new Mecca of alternative and Bohemian culture in Lisbon and the favourite place of intellectuals, artists and/or anyone who is looking for something original and different. This complex under the Ponte 25 de Abril bridge, in the heart of Alcântara, was in the 19th century one of the most important industrial areas of Lisbon and was transformed into a real experimental factory. The sensation of the moment is Funky (Edifício H), where you can drink and listen to live dj music.

Alfama

Alfama
What’s even more typical Portuguese than the melancholic fado singing that would come from an Inn in the Alfama District? The nostalgic and wistful chords of this song from the 19th century about unrequited love and homesickness is one of the icons of the Portuguese culture. Fado still remains an integral part of the essence of Alfama today, where you can find the best places to listen to this music style between the alleys, pavers and old Moorish buildings

Santa Apolónia

Santa Apolónia
Since the 1990s, Lisbon is known as one of the most important European cities in the field of clubbing. The city has a large number of options, from lounge, house, to electronic music. Avenida 24 de Julho and Santa Apolónia are the most important areas for contemporary dancing of the Portuguese capital.

Príncipe Real

Príncipe Real
Portugal was the sixth European country in 2010 that accepts the marriage between persons of the same sex. Since then, the Portuguese capital celebrates this enthusiastic with “gay pride” as the opening of different occasions for this type of audience, a community which is strongly represented in the artists and professional world and radiates an atmosphere of tolerance and respect. For some, Lisbon is already a major travel destination for the gay community.

Príncipe Real is the beating heart of this new scene in the capital where recently new places for this audience were opened. One of the streets near the square is Rua Cecílio De Sousa, the “Chueca” of Lisbon.
