Christmas in PortugalLondon-Event6

Christmas celebrations in Portugal are the same as in other countries. The Portuguese use Christmas trees and Santa Claus (Pai Natal). Families typically put a Christmas show on (Presépio) with Mary, Joseph, the cow and the donkey, the three wise men, but the image of infant Jesus is usually only at the decor added after the family went to the midnight mass. Kids get their presents usually around midnight on Christmas Eve and don’t wait until the next morning.

The consoada is a family gathering where everyone waits for the arrival of Santa Claus at midnight after dinner on Christmas Eve. The main course is usually cooked during the consoada bacalhau (COD), potatoes and cabbage or leafy vegetable with olive oil. The variety and quantity of desserts is normally huge. Rice pudding with cinnamon, Rabanadas (a special French toast), pastries made with syrup or honey which the Broas Mel and Bolo Rei (King cake), are certainly a delight for anyone who loves sweet.

The Bolo Rei takes a special place during the Christmas celebrations: in this powerful wreath shaped fruitcake, which is covered with candied fruit and pine nuts is a little surprise hidden, a bean (fava) — the first one who finds the fava should pay the Bolo Rei next year. On Christmas day the Portuguese visit their friends and especially their family and then they have a great family lunch, usually with grilled chicken, lamb or Turkey.
