Every April 23rd, the streets of Catalonia burst into color, romance, and stories. It is Sant Jordi Day, a celebration that beautifully blends love and literature – think of it as Catalonia´s version of Valentine´s Day, but with a unique twist. As a love of books, roses, and meaningful traditions, I am Julia, and I am here to be your guide to one of my favorite days of the year.
What is Sant Jordi Day?
Sant Jordi (Saint George) is the patron of Catalonia, and his legend is at the heart of this holiday. The story goes that George bravely slayed a dragen to save a princess. From the dragon´s blood, a red rose grew, which he gave to her. Romantic, right??
But in Catalonia, this legend evolved into something more: a day where men traditionally give roses and women give books – a symbolic exchange of love and culture. Over time, the tradition modernized, and now it is common for everyone to gift both books and roses, regardless of gender.
The streets come alive
Walking through Barcelona or any Catalan town on April 23rd feels like stepping into a dream. Bookstalls line the streets. Local authors sign copies. Floristsdisplay endless bouquets of roses, often wrapped with a sprig of wheat and a red-and-yellow ribbon symbolizing Catalonia.
Couples, families and friends roam around, soaking up the festive atmosphere. Cafés buzz with conversation, and there is a contagious sense of joy in the air. It is a holiday without fireworks, but full of hearts.

How to celebrate like a local
If you are lucky enough to be in Catalonia on Sant Jordi Day, here is how to make the most of it:
Give a book and a rose: Choose something meaningful – maybe your favorite novel or a story you think the other person would love. Pair it with a rose (red for love, but yellow and white are also common).
Visit local book markets: Even if you are not buying, browsing is half the fun. You might discover a new favorite author or stumble upon a signed copy.
Support local authors and bookshops: Sant Jordi is a celebration of literature. Instead of shopping online, buy from local vendors and help keep the literary spirit alive.
Write a note: Tuck a handwritten message inside the book or attach on to the rose. It is a personal touch that makes the gift unforgettable.

Not in Catalonia? Celebrate anyway!
Even if you are far from Spain, you can still join in the magic:
- Gift a book and a flower to someone you care about
- Read something that inspires you
- Share a story with a friend
- Post a favorite quote or book recommendation online to spread the love
Final thoughts
Sant Jordi Day is more than just a tradition – it is a reminder of how stories and gestures, no matter how small, can bring us closer. In a world that often moves too fast, April 23rs invites us to pause, appreciate beauty, and share something meaningful.
Whether you are in Barcelona or on the other side of the world, I hope you find your own way to celebrate. Happy Sant Jordi Day!!
Write love and pages,
Julia
