Taxis on the island can be recognized by the taxi sign and TX on the license plate. You have to agree on a price with the driver, because the taxis have no meters. A tip for the driver is appreciated, but not required.

More and more people are cycling on Curacoa, but it is not suitable to explore the entire island. This is because of the high temperatures and the fact that Curaçao is pretty big to explore on the bike. The first bike path is laid out on Banda Riba. People cycle on the same road as where cars drive. Please pay attention when you go cycling; most motorists are not used to bicyclers.

With a rental car on Curacao you are free to go wherever and whenever you want. That makes it an ideal means of transport on the island. Especially if you rent a car that has airco then the drive on the island is very enjoyable. And about the fuel prices, you don’t have to worry,they are not so expensive.

The rental rates can be quite different. If you want to rent a car, search in advance from which car rental company you want to rent a car. Often it is also cheaper to reserve a car than rent it on the ground.

There are several rental companies where you can rent a car. Most car rental companies are present at the airport.

A credit card is often a requirement, otherwise there is often asked for a deposit. Question on departure what you should do in the event of an accident. The minimum age to rent a car is usually 21 years, but check this first at the car rental company.

Public transportation on Curaçao is provided. There are two forms of public transport, with buses and minibuses.

By bus
Transport with buses (konvooi) is provided by Bus Company Curacao N.v. (ABC). These buses are for the longer distances on the island. Buses run once per hour and are usually yellow or blue in color. They drive a fixed route for a fixed price. The main bus stations can be found next to the post Office at the so called ‘ Waaigat ‘ in Punda and next to the pedestrian underpass in Otrabanda. From Punda and Otrobanda there are buses to 9 routes departing from 12 routes. Buses run all over the island and bring you to many places, landmarks, museums and beaches. By mini van

For shorter distances, it is best to choose a mini van. A mini van can hold up to 9 people. The vans can be identified by the word ‘ BUS ‘ on the license plate. They start their routes on the bus stations in Punda and Otrobanda, but have no fixed schedule. Behind the windscreen is a sign saying where they’re driving. You can go in a van anywhere you want. You can also get off where you want. Officially the vans may not stop at bus stops, therefore, you need to stand a few metres from the stop to prevent the van to drive away. There are many of this vans, but after 23:00 there are driving less vans on the road. They are safe and not expensive. The minivans drive for a fixed price, but over the weekend, this can vary.

Hold yourself to these rules when you want to take a mini van. this way you will avoid unpleasant surprises along the way:
– Hold your hand up when you see driving a van with BUS on the licence plate. (Standing by a bus stop? Go a little back) – Ask, before getting in, where the driver is going.
– After that, say where you want to get off the bus.
– Ask how much the ride costs.
– If you agree with the price, pay the driver.
– Get in the bus.
