Tourist information in Lisbon

On the large Praça do Comércio in the Baixa district, you’ll find the Lisbon Welcome Centre. This is the most important tourist office of the city where you can pick up free maps, folders and brochures. You can also buy the Lisboa Card.
The Tourist Office also has a number of smaller kiosks scattered throughout the city, called ‘ Ask Me Lisboa ‘. You can find these small offices among others at the Santa Apolónia station, the airport of Lisbon, Rua Augusta, Largo dos Jerónimos and Praça dos Restauradores.

ATM services in Lisbon

Everywhere in Lisbon you can find ATM machines and in the Centre are some great affiliates from well known banks. In some large and modern restaurants, hotels, shops and department stores are all credit cards and debit card payments accepted. While at a number of small shops and restaurants you can only pay with cash. It is very clever to always bring some cash with you and to pay close attention to the payment options in restaurants and shops.

Safety in Lisbon

Generally, Lisbon is a safe city, but in some areas you have to watch out for pickpockets and bags thieves. The Torre de Belém where it is often very busy with groups of tourists and street vendors, is a notorious place for pickpockets. Also in the Rua Augusta in Baixa and on the popular tram 28, several tourists lost their wallet. In the evening and at night it is better to not go through the alleys of the districts of Alfama and Graça alone. Finally, there are some suburbs in Lisbon, such as Amadora and Buraca, which tourists can better avoid at all times.

In the city of Lisbon you will find mail boxes anywhere . For other Post Office Business you can go to one of the several Portuguese postal company CTT post offices, such as the General post Office on Praça dos Restauradores.

How late do the stores open and close

The opening hours in Lisbon vary quite by type of store. The big stores in shopping centres are often open 7 days a week from 10 am till after 23:00. Smaller shops often go close in the afternoon for a lunch break and are closed from 1 pm on Saturday. Supermarkets close on Saturday  at 1 p.m.
